Despite its length this remains one of Mahler’s monumental achievements & the final movement is indeed a unique moment. I also love the children‘s chorus with the alto & the latters solo contribution as well. Ludwig & Ferrier are absolutely sublime on their separate recordings of this music. Ferrier, as far as I know, has only one recorded performance live from 1947 that one can hear which only recently was issued. Although taped from the radio it is surprisingly clear. Mahler also captured nature superbly here & I love his comment made to Bruno Walter when the latter visited him in the wondrous Austrian landscape. Walter, being raised in Berlin was in awe of seeing such phenomenal scenery to which Mahler said something like: No need to stare at all that. I composed it all already! The composer was not short of ego but in this music one can experience the correlation between what one hears & the visual image that overwhelmed Walter.

Mahler doesn't look anything like the composer of these gigantic works. One imagines a seven foot, three hundred pound man, not someone who resembled my high school geography teacher in Montevideo, Conrado Schneider. I hesitate to pick a favorite Mahler symphony, they're all so darn great. Schubert's ninth seems to run through all of them, processional, majestic, playful, never pompous. That ninth may also have inspired Bruckner's symphonic style.
